Teaching History for Lower Level Learners

While browsing the website this week, a particular "Ask a Master Teacher" question caught my eye - "Lower Level Learners: Teaching Their Way." I know I am always looking for ways to reach the struggling students in my classes and I thought it was pretty topical considering all the conversations we've had recently in class.

Take a minute to read the response to the reader question and I would encourage you to explore the link they've included on adapting historical documents for the classroom.

  1. I like the idea of changing historical documents, but I fear that some things may be left out for stronger readers. At Fitchburg High, they are always making sure that students have "equal access" to material, so I always think about how to make things so that they are the same for all levels of my students.
I think that if I were to adapt a historical document, I would present it in two columns and keep the original format on the left and the "translated" column on the right. This can also be a fun opportunity to put in slang terms (or not) depending on the maturity level of the class.
